BITE Premium Pubs: Update!

Premium Pubs UpdateOur BITE Premium Pub scheme took off better than we thought! The picture on the right shows you just a few of the Welcome Packs that are going out today, it’s been a busy morning getting them altogether ready to send out for the pubs!

We will be launching the Premium Pubs section on BITE soon where we showcase all the pubs that are part of the scheme. These pubs will have greater detail than our standard pub listings and include things like opening times, events, etc.

To all the Premium Pubs that are waiting for their Welcome Packs, they should be with you in the next 24hrs as we’ve finally sealed the last of the envelopes just now 🙂

Don’t forget, joining the scheme enables you to:

  • Add your website link direct to your pub page
  • Add all the facilities your pub offers and a brief description
  • List events, jobs and your food and drink menus
  • View statistics about how many people visit your pub page each month
  • Use our new function room booking system which launches in July 2011!

The John Snow, Soho

Who’d have thought a simple act of a kiss would cause so much controversy? Back last Wednesday when Jonathan Williams and James Bull decided to have a kiss in the pub, The John Snow, they were ejected by the landlord. Now we don’t need to repeat the news to you, it’s covered in plenty of detail here and here, also here and here! As you know, a Gay Kiss-In was organised via Facebook and Twitter for everyone to turn up at 7pm at the John Snow and kiss.

The pub decided to deal with it by shutting its doors and turfing everyone out a couple of hours beforehand. This drew more news reports and tweets about it and the number of people visiting the John Snow page on BITE rocketed. The pub page had the same amount of traffic to it in 4 hours as it usually gets in two months! With that unfortunately came a barrage of comments – but, and this is the whole point of this article: the majority of them were not publishable by us because they were offensive. People on both sides of the argument were submitting comments and direct messages to us that you wouldn’t want your mother to hear! This is all well and good, people in the heat of the moment, etc. But then when the dust settles and they move onto something else, we’re left to deal with the flak from a lawsuit or the police for hosting offensive material.

See, we’re stuck in an odd position. We want to run a non-bias website about pubs. We want you guys to say which are the good and the bad ones – that’s fine. Unfortunately, some people can’t follow our guidelines and they submit comments which you just cannot publish.

We totally agree with Jonathan and James about the incident and don’t believe they should have been kicked out either. But, please guys – remember what you are putting when you submit reviews. It has to be truthful and can be backed up otherwise we can’t publish it. It’s not that we’re taking a stance on whether the pub is right and you are wrong or not.

Now enjoy your first Bank Holiday week of the year and get to some pubs! 🙂

How often do you eat out in pubs?

How often do you eat out in Pubs?Today’s blog post is about food. Since the smoking ban came into effect in the UK in 2007 a lot of pubs have had to adapt. Some worked, some closed. For some people it was a shame, for others it was brilliant news. Either way, a lot has changed in pubs over the last few years. It’s rare these days to find ‘wet led’ (drinks only) pubs apart from in places like Central London – who are catering purely for the workers, these pubs are often shut weekends when their regular patrons are back at home out of the city.

So, our question is – how often do you eat in a pub? Have you replaced going to restaurants to eat in pubs instead? We all know that the quality of food can differ vastly from one pub to a next. Some are obvious microwave style setups, whereas others have full on kitchens rivalling some of the best restaurants. Do you only eat in a pub if it’s a pub lunch or sunday dinner? Or would you go for a evening meal to a pub and make a night of it?

BITE: Most viewed pubs

Top 20 Most Viewed Pubs - By MonthWe’ve launched another new feature on BITE today! You can now view the most viewed pubs by month on the main site. We’ve also backdated it to the start of 2011.

Shortly after the start of each month you will be able to see the previous month’s busiest pubs on BITE. There are also ranking indicators for each month to show you where they were compared to last month.

BITE has always been a London-heavy pub guide and the stats show just that. In January 2011, The Harp was #4 in our Top 20 pubs, by February it had got the #1 spot and it kept it throughout March too. Only one pub managed to get in during January and February from outside of London, that was The Dolphin in Plymouth. In March however a second pub, The Crown Inn from Stockport crept in – will it manage to stay in there until the end of April though?

By the end of the Summer we might see countryside pubs make it into the Top 20 from all their BBQ’s and Summer events.. Talking of BBQ’s… we should be able to help you plan those a little easier from Friday… more details soon!

To visit the Most Viewed Pubs by Month, simply click here or follow the link in the left hand menu on BITE.
