“Real Bananas!”
That’s what I’d heard, infact I remember being offered a pint of this about a year ago and declining, thinking it was just a gimmick flavoured beer.
However, I was assured that it was made using real bananas in the brewing process. It was the one beer that night that really captured my curiosity, I seemed to be drawn to it’s pump, twice I was sure I’d started my order by Hanbys Golden Honey and somehow drifted down to the Wells pump reading the label over and over.
The seducing bitch of a beer, before I knew it I was back outside with a pint in my hands exclaiming “try this, you’ve got to try it, it’s awesome”.
I was suprised that there was nothing I could dislike about this beer, it had a malty, thick, warm look to it, with an obvious banana aroma, I emptied half the glass within 10 minutes just wanting to keep trying it. The banana taste compliments the beer with a sweet balance to the chocolatey palett, If you can taste passed the banana it’s got a real yeasty quality that parks it right back in the beer line-up, it’s easily enjoyable for a few pints, and it’s presence sparked more offerings to non-beer drinkers than any other pint that night. It’s not a beer that will instantly appeal to the beer conesiuer, but if you’re looking for a great alternative, or want to join in the Wetherspoons Real Ale celebration - but don’t like ale, then Wells Banana Bread beer is the perfect drink.
